Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) huts are primarily built as a base for mountaineers to spend the night before starting at dawn, with ropes, ice axe and crampons, to conquor the surrounding peaks. They also make an excellent destination for long day walks, before returning to the valley.
Typically they offer a good choice of food and drink at very reasonable prices, considering most of them are supplied by helicopter these days!
The 8 huts around Kandersteg are:
- Blümlisalphütte
- Lötschenpasshütte
- Freundenhütte
- Balmhornhütte
- Doldenhornhütte
- Berghaus Gfellalp (not strictly a SAC hut but a high-level restaurant with accommodation)
- Berghaus Schwarenbach (not strictly a SAC hut but a high-level restaurant with accommodation)
- Lämmerenhütte
