There are a number of high-level, panorama walks (Höhenwegs) around Kandesteg and the Rhone valley side of the Lötschberg tunnel. Typically they are constructed or augmented by transport companies to provide one-way walks with train or bus to bring you home. They are:
  • The Nord Rampe between Kandersteg and Kiental
  • The Höhenweg Südrampe above the Rhone valley, through Hohten, Ausserberg, Eggerberg and Lalden with variations that will take you higher to the Honalp, Finnu and Kastler and continuations down through Mund and Birgisch right down to Brig at the mouth of the Simplon tunnel. The southern parts of this walk are a good bet if the weather is poor in Kandersteg. The station at Kandersteg can provide appropriate tickets such as Kandersteg to Hohten, returning from Lalden.
  • The Lötschental Höhenweg from Fafleralp across the Lauchneralp to Faldumalp and then down the steep path to Goppenstein
  • The Frutigen Panoramaweg from the Elsigenalp down to Frutigen
These paths tend not to have too much strenuous climb and have many variations depending on weather, fitness and inclination.
